Alan Watts ~ Why We’re So Depressed…

Alan Watts ~ Why We’re So Depressed…

suppose most of you are familiar with this old optical illusion And you’re asked the question which of the three thick black line is the longer and I suppose ones natural reaction is to say the one on the left and I think you know that this is a result of the illusion of perspective An illusion with which we are so used to which we’re so used and by which. We’re so easily fooled Once we’ve accustomed ourselves to it You might if that picture were drawn more vividly? Even be predisposed to thinking that with a real passage stretching away from you the doors at the end Of course if you came up against that kind of thing painted against the wall you might Make the mistake of walking into it and banging your nose but this is an example of what we were talking about last time as Maya that word from Indian Philosophy which generally has the meaning of illusion or rather Illusions brought about by the acceptance of certain conventions of which perspective was an example When we are not aware that certain things which we take for granted like the separateness of each of things from each other when we’re not aware that this is a matter of convention We are out to be fooled Now I think one of the conventions by which we tend to be fooled more than almost any other is time and for all human beings time is a matter of extraordinary importance and perhaps This is one of the principal ways in which we differ from animals Because man has been called a time binding animal that is to say a creature who is vividly aware of the fact that his life Moves as it were along a line From the past through the present and into the future animals apparently live pretty much moment by moment They don’t appear to have very strong memories But because man has a strong memory He is able to bear the past in mind and as it were cast it Forward into visions of the future based upon what has happened in the past and therefore although this facility gives man the most extraordinary ability to plan his life to prepare for future eventualities at the same time there is a very heavy price which he pays for it and especially if he takes this ability too seriously in other words if he doesn’t realize That the true reality in which he lives is the present moment now for example the animal probably doesn’t concern itself very much with problems of future disease death or starvation things of that kind If an animal sees another dead animal lying around I don’t suppose he thinks to himself well One day that’s going to happen to me Rather he just sees a dead animal sniffs it, sees whether it’s good to eat and wanders away But for human being that’s entirely different Because we actually spend most of our time and a great deal of our emotional energy living in time. Which is not here Living in and elsewhere, which is not concretely real. So much, so that although we may be quite comfortable and happy in our present circumstances If there is not a guarantee not a promise of a good time coming tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow we’re at once Unhappy even in the midst of pleasure and affluence and so we develop a kind of chronic anxiety about time We want to be sure more and more because of our Sensitivity to the feeling and we want to be sure more and more that our future is assured for this reason the future becomes of more importance to most human beings than the present and in this sense we are hooked taken in by a Maya Because it is a very little use to us to be able to control and plan the future Unless we are capable at the same time of living totally in the present and so when in Civilized societies, we spend so much of our time living for the future. We become very much like those Celebrated donkeys, you know that have a carrot Fastened on a stick that’s tied to the neck you know behind here, and it comes over And there’s the carrot dangling in front of them, and they pursue it pursue it pursue it, but can never reach it And so in exactly the same way, it’s that way with us My goodness don’t you remember when you went first to school? You went to kindergarten? Kindergarten the idea was to push along so that you could get into first grade and Then push along, so to get into second grade third grade So on going up and up and then you went to high school and this was a great transition in life and now the pressure is being put on you must get ahead You must go up the grades and finally be good enough to get to college and then when you get to college You’re still going step by step step by step up to the great moment in which you’re ready to go out into the world And then when you get out into this famous world comes the struggle for success in Profession or business and again there seems to be a ladder before you something for which you’re reaching all the time and then Suddenly When you’re about 40 or 45 years old in the middle of life, you wake up one day and say Huh? I’ve arrived And by Joe I feel pretty much the same as I’ve always felt In fact, I’m not so sure that I don’t feel a little bit cheated Because you see you were fooled You were always living for somewhere where you aren’t and while as I said it is of Tremendous use for us to be able to look ahead in this way and to plan There is no use panning for a future Which when you get to it, and it becomes a present you won’t be there you’ll be living in some other future which hasn’t yet arrived and so in this way one is never able actually to inherit and enjoy the fruits of one’s action You can’t live at all unless you can live fully now and because now is never satisfactory because we’re never really living in it We get more and more avid to go ahead and pursue the future. We develop our technology to a fantastic ability Where we can more and more fulfill our desires for the future almost immediately Working Towards a sort of Push-button world But have you ever stopped to think what the world would be like if you could fulfill every wish the moment you wished Suppose for example; I’m going to bed at night. You could always dream Whatever you wanted to dream What would happen after a while ? of course I suppose at first: You would dream fantastic pleasures wonderful Adventures fulfilment of all the things you ever wished Then as time went on don’t you think you’d want to be… oh? a little bit surprised to have a little bit less control over what was happening to you and After you’d experimented with this for some months or years you might even want dreams in which you suffer because There is no real delight No real fulfillment without delay doesn’t every child know on a hot day you think I’m terribly thirsty And I’d like an ice-cream soda Haven’t you tried the experiment of putting off drinking it putting our so to get thirstier and thirstier? And it’s so much fun when you finally get to it So in the same way in patience of time always wanting the future this frustrating

  1. Best channel on youtube till now for me personnaly , always uploading this wonderful , great and so wise man , much love to you ? and Thank you?keep up the good work✊

  2. Let’s face it this guy is not saying anything even remotely profound — it’s his accent you simpletons are all mesmerized by. Every time I go to the bar to get drunk there’s a drunk beside me slurring these same words.

  3. I needed this.

Time frightens me to no end…it takes people away, memories fade and it’s marking my every move. Because of this fear, I tend to overthink a lot of sentimental moments, good and bad. Sometimes even dissociation on really exceptional moments, trying to hard to capture something and then you suddenly lose it…I must learn, Alan Watts helps so so much. How pleasant would it have been to speak to him intellectually.

  4. Nowadays, most people have become like animals. Most of us will see others suffer and not care at all and say “It is okay as long as not me the one suffering”

  5. I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my YouTube channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. ?❤

  6. well i believe dogs have memory mans best friend created by man. beat a dog abuse it when young it never forgets just like man

  7. You know, i try.. i do… i do things i want to do when i can… i dont usually wait for others, but even less as ive gotten older. I always think about the fact that im alive now and i want to do it now.. it was the driving force behind why i went skydiving for my last bday.. one of the best experiences ive known as a living human– there is nothing like it on earth…. i also do lots of things by myself because what i realized was that waiting for others means it may never happen..and that's all it takes… so go for it..whatever it is… just go for it.

  8. Always tell myself to live in the present. Somehow I always end up getting lost inside myself again. Here’s to all the lone wolfs out there.

  9. Ive been listening to his lectures for years, but I've never seen a video of him speaking… It kind of wierds me out for some reason lol

  12. You know, 4 5 years ago, when i was a little younget i said that i wanted to be a simply clerk and be one all my life. This childrens thought of mine got scolded and both my parents and teachers manipulated and corrected me. Now i see this and i…Kind of understand why i felt depressed since then. I always feel guilty, for things i havent done. And i always feel anxious about doing something wrong but…Now i feel alot lighter that i have watched 4 hours worth of this man in the last week.

  14. Imagine schools with young minds embracing the words of Alan Watts? Actually learning. I am 41 years of age. Growing up I was full of warmth and giving although every good intention I had was quickly taken apart piece by piece due to individual greed. Then once I recognised individual greed it became apparent that the stings dropped down a great deal higher. I lost myself, despised myself… not fitting in with the general narrative made me lonely. How could I be lonely with the most beautiful wife and three gorgeous children. It takes a huge reboot to realise that…. me thinking the best of everyone, like I did growing up, can still exist. I just need to be more tolerant and realise that we are all in this together, you are me, I am you. Playing hangman will never be the same again.

  15. Think about what he said: “working towards a push button world.” Here we are, depressed in 2019, with our push button phones. The man was spot on.

  16. The thing about wisdom is that, it's different interpretation for everyone on how they should conduct their lives and on which aspect of lives they introspect. Truly amazing. You see this in ancient texts and proverbs and metaphors. From Gautama Siddharta (Buddha) to Socrates to Plato, Aristotles, and great men of their respective times. That's why when you have a certain meaning you grasped for yourself sometimes doesn't work for others. It is marvelous that some people in life is able to pave ways for each individual's spiritual enlightenment in this ever advancing world on this flying rock.

  17. Better ask our leaders why we are so depressed!
Obviously is like a bug came from them!
Cuz they are our head, and we are the body, so if something is wrong with depression it will be in the head!
We just the body to keep working!
Ask them they will know better, they are the intelligents, if not good we'll!
They shouldn't be let to be leaders in first place!

  18. 明日复明日,明日何其多。

    我生待明日,万事成蹉跎 。

    世人若被明日累,春去秋来老将至。

    朝看水东流,暮看日西坠。

    百年明日能几何?请君听我明日歌。
    Just live today!

  19. "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle, perfectly fits together with Alan Watts lectures. 🙂

  20. I don't regret any of my decisions. I do wish I can be happy though. If you can be happy then nothing else really matters

  21. If you're living in the past, you're depressed.
If you're living in the future, you're anxious.
If you're living in the present, you're at peace.

  22. In this world I don't think you can survive without planning for the future, but I completely do agree with what he's saying. It's all about balance.

  23. Everyone is depressed because its in fashion the new misery. The genuinely depressed have no voice and are only heard when its too late. Everybodys in therapy Nobody wants to dig deep and find out the cause of their depression??? Usually unresolved abusive memories and impotent anger turned inwards is the cause, everybody has them. The depressed need to be kept in a quiet place till their mind body connection is recharged and then introduced back into society gradually, if thats what they want. Depression doesnt just appear by magic. Their is always a cause and effect. Sever your abusive ties. Your life is way more important than the scum who destroy peoples lives with slanderous words. There is a special place in hell for idiots like these, who think life is but a joke..Happiness comes from within, not from external objects or circumstances…

  24. i am muslim. and i believe in god . and god knows how much this guy is right on time right on point with our future worries or ever present worries . nothing lasts nothing matters also his beAUTIFUL SPEECHES THANKS ALAN

  25. I understand the meaning of what he is saying and i already have experienced this while i was sitting in my garden watching the bees flying to the flowers like in slow motion. But there are times and moments in which i forgot about this and im stressed and saying things that i regret to people who i love. I want to say "No" to all the modern technologies, yet i struggle miserably 🙁 What's even worse, that there are so many people who haven't even heard of Alan Watts, Jiddu Krishnamurti or Erich Fromm for example. How can they handle their frustration? I want us all to be unite and it took me quiet some years to realize it. I guess we have to go through rly serious trouble to wake up. But i believe.

  26. Alan Watts has been a great blessing to the world. He had a gift to explain complex subjects and put them in a way everyone can understand. His wisdom was just out of this world. May the supreme hold him in peace and love eternally. RIP Allen Watts

  27. We are all connected in this world! Meditating is the key!! Our universe is beautifully designed!! Enjoy the journey nothing else matters! It's nice to be at peace!!

  28. The past can't hurt you and the future doesn't exist, all you have is the present. Thank you Universe for Alan Watts.

  29. I love Alan Watts, but do you think his words would have been so profound if he had like a very northern Minnesota accent lol

  30. i am in big pain now cause i am spliting with the woman that is my half and i chose to love , watts please shopw me the way

  31. Came back for a second listen and definitely focuses the mind in the right way …very much like eckhart tolle and his book the power of now

  32. This such an important message. If many many people to not understand this in these days, I can’t imagine how people this knowledge during his time in the physical form. Love and light to you all.

  33. Why have you taken this 4:3 original source video, squished it to 16:9 and then put black bars at the top and bottom? It looks terrible

  34. Just juice every day as best as you can and sleep with that. One day at a time. Being thankful for the opportunity to have lived that day. That's it. Just stay there. Amen ॐ

  35. Ive made this realisation the third time I took LSD that the future is controllable. I was so happy at first, and then, like the dreams, I became neutral and then even depressed to the point where I autohypnotized myself to forget what I just realize to be able to live in the present again.

  36. Allen watts ran from the Nazis in ww2 he is a scam and a coward , I refuse to listen to a man who ran from evil when the world went and confronted it.

  37. "The past makes you wanna die out of regret and the future makes you depressed out of anxiety. So by elimination, the present is likely the happiest time."

  38. Why we are depressed in this generation?

Get off your phone and stay from the internet for some time.
Put on your shoes, go outside and breath the fresh hair and receive the sun light
    Hydrate your mind and body
Meditate outdoors to clear your mind.
Eat clean. No, I will not force you away from animal products but I want you to eat clean for 30 days. I know it’s hard but it’s a must that your body needs.
Gather some friends and plan a trip that’ll last a lifetime forever in your memories.

Get off your phone and get out of the house. Please, there is so much more out there.

  39. Excellent video!! Protect this video at all times, powerful msg, Every day I listen to him before I go to bed.. the impact of his teachings on my life is huge

  40. I have awareness of past and future, yet whenever I'm walking down the street, I take pleasure in sniffing dead animals to see if they're good to eat and wander away.

  41. Understanding has come in small stages over the last 4yrs; confusion, was the most dangerous stage..it was this stage that affected me the most and influenced me to never be able to forgive… I can't forgive my self either. Eventually you will forget. won't. Out of all the motivating emotions I feel from time to time I feel the most comfortable with resentment. It book ends with the humiliation. Resentment will make it All possible.. I'll be able to sleep with a clean heart afterwards

  42. Imagine if something of this nature aired on tv instead of real house wives of somewhere or Jersey shore or etc etc. We do it to ourselves

  43. If only you knew what is in store for you…you would cry tears of happiness. Yes you, reading this, right now. Just let go, and trust the will of the Higher Self. All your problems will be resolved. Blessings to you.

  44. A real teacher I wish he was still alive , im glad of all the videos available came across him via a link , what a man if only he was still around he should of been on TV every day to remind people there is more to life then capitalism , and most of all he was English he would of made millions wake up from the sleep everyone is in wondering when the real meaning will show itself , God bless his parents for such a great child , instead of gambling on TV at night let us ask the brainwashing channels to air such words of wisdom
