Down Syndrome – Boys Town National Research Hospital


Down syndrome is a genetic syndrome that children
are born with and it is unique in both physical characteristics and the personalities of children. A lot of children with Down syndrome typically
are very social but struggle with school and they have a lot of other health issues as
well, including endocrine abnormalities and cardiac abnormalities. Their neurological signs is particularly difficulty
with school and completing complex tasks. Part of our job as neurologists treating kids
with Down syndrome is to again come up with a combined treatment plan that’s helping
them to achieve their potential in life. There has been some great advances in medication
for children with Down syndrome that are helping to improve their alertness, their language
and their reading skills. These medicines are in the works and there’s
a lot more clinical trials out there and we’ve really really hit a lot of strides with treating
Down syndrome.
