Twilight Syndrome – Search (English), Part 20: The Thirteen Steps

MIKA: “If we go up one more floor, there will be the rumoured flight of stairs where you can sometimes count 13 steps instead of 11…” MIKA: “Yukari? Chisato? First, let’s count these normal stairs, okay?” MIKA: “…” MIKA: “One…” MIKA: “Two…” MIKA: “Three…” MIKA: “Four…” MIKA: “Five…” MIKA: “Six…” MIKA: “Seven…” MIKA: “Eight…” MIKA: “Nine…” MIKA: “Ten…” MIKA: “Eleven…” MIKA: “See?” MIKA: “In this new part of the school building, every flight of stairs has 11 steps!” YUKARI: “Yeah. I guess.” MIKA: “But what would you do, if like the rumour says, you’d suddenly count 13 instead…?” YUKARI: “…Something like that is impossible.” MIKA: “Mystery number one… The fearful flight of stairs that turns into thirteen steps at night.” YUKARI: “That’s here?” YUKARI: “Why? What’s so special about this flight of stairs?” MIKA: “That’s the thing! They should be the same as all the others!” A: “Okay, let’s begin.”
B: “Is there any background story attached to this place, Mika?”
C: “Chisato, do you feel anything here?” A: “Okay, let’s begin.”
B: “Is there any background story attached to this place, Mika?” [X]
C: “Chisato, do you feel anything here?” YUKARI: “Is there any backstory attached to this place, too?” MIKA: “But of course!” MIKA: “There’s no such as thing as a ghost that appears without a reason!” MIKA: “It is when they want to tell us something that they show themselves.
–Words by: Chisato Itsushima!” CHISATO: “Mika!” MIKA: “Oooh, you’re getting all red!” MIKA: “Your reaction is just too good! ♥️” YUKARI: “Mika!” MIKA: “Alright, alright. Let me explain.” MIKA: “So… This happened shortly after this new school was constructed.” MIKA: “On the landing above this, the school had stashed away a multitude of excess desks.” MIKA: “But then, one day… a junior came to grab one of these desks, and on his way down he missed a step on the stairs and…” MIKA: “Well, he was carrying a freaking desk with his hands, right?” MIKA: “So he had no way of regaining his balance and, together with the desk, he fell head first all the way down from the top of the stairs……” MIKA: “He smashed with his head into the floor of this corridor and broke his neck…” MIKA: “They say, he was dead instantly.” MIKA: “…Ever since then, on nights where his ghost will appear…” MIKA: “…the number of steps of this flight of stairs goes up to 13.” MIKA: “They say, right where we are standing now was, like, a sea of his blood…” MIKA: “Did you know? Wounds that concern the head always bleed like crazy!” A: “Let’s begin.”
B: “Chisato, do you feel anything here?” A: “Let’s begin.”
B: “Chisato, do you feel anything here?” [X] YUKARI: “Chisato, do you feel anything here?” CHISATO: “No…” CHISATO: “At least… nothing human…” YUKARI: “What the… hell is that supposed to mean…?” CHISATO: “Well… Maybe it means… If you really count 13 steps here, then…” MIKA: “…then this mystery’s rumour is true.” MIKA: “But in that case, you will meet the ghost of that boy who fell down the stairs…” YUKARI: “…Well, I think it’s just a stupid rumour.” YUKARI: “Nonetheless: Be careful, Mika.” MIKA: “What!? What are you saying!?” YUKARI: “I’m saying, you should be careful not to fall down the stairs!” MIKA: “What? You’re not going to do the counting?” YUKARI: “Why the HELL would I be doing this!?” MIKA: “Well, because it seems you don’t believe in it, anyway… so you’re not scared, right?” MIKA: “I, on the other hand, AM scared…” A: “Don’t act like a spoiled child!”
B: “I’m… a bit hesitant myself…”
C: “Fine, I just gotta go up and count, right?” A: “Don’t act like a spoiled child!”
B: “I’m… a bit hesitant myself…”
C: “Fine, I just gotta go up and count, right?” [X] YUKARI: “I g-guess, you’re… right…” YUKARI: “Fine, I suppose I’ll… do it?” CHISATO: “Would you prefer, if I did it?” YUKARI: “What? Why? There’s nothing to it!” YUKARI: “I just have to count the steps, right?” CHISATO: “……” MIKA: “Good luck, Yukari!” YUKARI: “…” YUKARI: “One…” YUKARI: “Two…” YUKARI: “Three…” YUKARI: “Four…” YUKARI: “Five…” YUKARI: “Six…” YUKARI: “Seven…” YUKARI: “Eight…” YUKARI: “Nine…” YUKARI: “Ten…” YUKARI: “Eleven…” YUKARI: “Twelve…” YUKARI: “Thirteen…” A: “Th-this is bad…!”
B: “I probably just miscounted…” A: “Th-this is bad…!” [X]
B: “I probably just miscounted…” YUKARI: “Ah!!” CHISATO: “Yukari!” CHISATO: “Yukari, are you okay?!” YUKARI: “Nh…” CHISATO: “Yukari!?” YUKARI: “Nnnnhgoddamnit that hurt!!” CHISATO: “…Are you fine?” YUKARI: “Yeah, don’t worry…” MIKA: “He appeared…! He appeared, didn’t he!?” MIKA: “We have to run!! He won’t let it end with just that!” A: “Hey, Chisato, what do you think?”
B: “Hold on a second…”
C: “Let’s run!!” A: “Hey, Chisato, what do you think?” [X]
B: “Hold on a second…”
C: “Let’s run!!” YUKARI: “Chisato, what’s your opinion? Is there really…” CHISATO: “Let’s calm down a little bit first, okay?” CHISATO: “Nothing has happened, yet, has it?” MIKA: “But! She counted 13 steps!!” MIKA: “If we’re going to run away, it’s now or never!” A: “Let’s wait and see.”
B: “Yeah, we should run, after all!” A: “Let’s wait and see.” [X]
B: “Yeah, we should run, after all!” YUKARI: “Let’s… Let’s wait just a little bit.” CHISATO: “Mika, aren’t you forgetting what these rumours are all about?” CHISATO: “We need to stay and confirm, whether or not that boy’s ghost really appears.” CHISATO: “That’s what we came here for, isn’t it?” MIKA: “Wh… What?!” MIKA: “That’s… Well… Yeah…” CHISATO: “See? So let’s wait.” MIKA: “……” YUKARI: “It seems like… nothing is happening, Mika?” MIKA: “B-but!” MIKA: “He probably just hasn’t shown himself to us, yet! If we want to run, we should do it now!!” A: “Chisato, what do you think?”
B: “Huh? B-but…”
C: “I agree, let’s run!!” A: “Chisato, what do you think?” [X]
B: “Huh? B-but…”
C: “I agree, let’s run!!” YUKARI: “Chisato, do you… feel any presence…?” CHISATO: “……” CHISATO: “Nothing in particular…” CHISATO: “Actually, uhm, I don’t really get any bad vibes from this place at all.” MIKA: “B-but! There’s no doubt that Yukari counted 13 steps! We all witnessed it!!” MIKA: “This is too dangerous! Let’s bail!” MIKA: “If we wait until something happens, it’ll be too late!” A: “Huh?! B-but…”
B: “Okay, we’re running!!” A: “Huh?! B-but…” [X]
B: “Okay, we’re running!!” CHISATO: “Yukari, stay calm, let us think about this.” YUKARI: “Y-yeah… You’re right.” YUKARI: (So… Let’s see…) YUKARI: (Perhaps because the stairs face north, they…) YUKARI: (Err, no! That’s occult nonsense! Calm down! Calm down…) YUKARI: (So I counted the stairs and ended up with 13… 13 steps…) YUKARI: (Hmm? 13 steps…) YUKARI: “Mika, can I ask you one thing?” MIKA: “Yukari, I’m begging you! First, let’s get away from here, then I’ll answer whatever you want!” YUKARI: “Get a hold of yourself and just answer me this, Mika: How many steps does this particular flight of stairs USUALLY have?” MIKA: “…What?” YUKARI: “I don’t even want to consider it, but… is it possible this particular flight of stairs has ALWAYS had 13 steps?!” MIKA: “What!?” MIKA: “Uh… I wonder… What do you think?” YUKARI: “I’m asking you!!” MIKA: “Me? Well, uhm…” MIKA: “I mean, of course it usually has 11 steps…” MIKA: “…Definitely…” YUKARI: “Definitely?” MIKA: “…Probably…” YUKARI: “Probably?!” MIKA: “Okay, I confess… that I never really checked that myself beforehand…” YUKARI: “You have some fucking nerve, Mika!!” MIKA: “Waaaaaah!” CHISATO: “Okay, let’s calm down, everyone!” YUKARI: ” You’re a fucking idiot…” MIKA: “I think we’re done here…” YUKARI: “Which of the remaining ones is closest from here?” MIKA: “If we go down these stairs, we’ll get to the library.” MIKA: “That’s were mystery number 3 awaits. The one about being able to hear ghosts talk to each other. Wanna check it out next?”

  1. I really like this type of games, it sucks that they didn't have a localization. Thank you so much for all this work, people like you are like real heroes

  2. This is one of my favorite urban legends, I learnt from it thanks to one of the Whispering Corridors movies ☺️ this made me feel nostalgic!

  3. I love how Yukari basically exists in a perpetual state of resignation and annoyance at Mika's antics.
